The Sack is officially back. After years of shunning the Hackey Sack, for the first time since the early 1980s, the sound of thousands of little beads in crochet balls fills the halls of WJ.
In between classes, during lunch or before sporting events, the game has evolved into an everyday occurrence. Clusters of students pack together to play, even for minutes at a time.
“Whenever we have downtime, we always just have the sack out,” senior Will Menard said. “It’s a great way to pass the time.”
The greatest mystery within this new movement is what started the resurgence. As popular as it was in the past, the game’s outreach is coming very close to the fame it had before.
Schools across the county, state and even the country have taken up Hacky-sacking. A huge part of the national fame this game has is its strong social media presence.
Accounts from different schools have posted their best rounds, or ‘sacks’, which have helped in growing the game. @Wj.sac, among thousands of other schools, is now getting ranked by various accounts.
“I love watching other schools invent new ways to sack,” sophomore Ethan Taylor said. “[Follow] Wj.sac on Instagram if you want to see the best clips out there.”
The rapid speed at which Hacky-sacking has grown has completely cleared the shelves in local stores. Target, CVS and other stores that would have sacks in stock are now barren, along with the spark in activity.
“I have been to almost every store in the area in search of a Sack,” senior Ethan Gitelson said. “Even Amazon didn’t have any, so I might just try to make my own.”
The craze for the rebirth of Hacky Sack begs the question: what fad will be next…?
