The Walter Johnson girls’ flag football team ended its season with a competitive playoff run , with a dominant first-round victory and a close loss in the regional semifinals.

The Wildcats opened the postseason on Saturday, Nov. 1st with a 13–0 win over Magruder, relying on steady offense and organized defense to control the game. The shutout reflected the team’s preparation and focus throughout the week leading up to the anticipated matchup.

“We study our upcoming opponents before our games so we know what to expect,” said senior Alina Bonior. “I think it gives us a good advantage, not many teams do it.”

WJ established control early, moving the ball efficiently and limiting Magruder’s scoring chances. The defense stayed consistent, forcing turnovers and putting pressure on the quarterback, while the offense capitalized on key possessions to secure the win.

“With our defense, we know what we do and we are able to communicate with each other. If adjustments need to be made, we can definitely rely on them,” said senior Sonia Pegoue.

With that victory, WJ advanced to face Bethesda-Chevy Chase in the regional semifinals on Tuesday, Nov. 4th. BCC came out fast and scored two touchdowns, setting the tone with aggressive play on both sides of the ball. WJ responded with a touchdown from junior Victoria Irani Webb and an extra point by junior Gabby Buggs.

“They came out very aggressive and intense, ready to win,” said senior Julianna Cabanillas, “But we also had good plays too, we put in a lot of effort.”

Both teams had dominant plays in the second half, with strong defensive efforts limiting scoring opportunities. Yet BCC maintained the lead, holding on for a 13–7 win and ending WJ’s playoff run.

Even though the Cats did not advance further, players and coaches said the semifinal performance reflected the team’s progress this season. WJ showed the ability to stay composed under pressure and adapt to such high-level competition.

“I feel like this season was a big step for us,” said Webb. “We learned how to compete in tough situations and gained confidence in what we can do together.”

The team’s performance demonstrated continued development in its second year of county play and provided a foundation to build on moving forward.
