On Tuesday, May 5, the gymnastics team cemented its place in school history after becoming both division and county champions and completing an undefeated season. After months of practice, pressure and teamwork, the Gymcats proved themselves as one of the strongest teams in Montgomery County.
This win was more than just a title. This season carried extra meaning because of MCPS’s recent decision announcing plans to defund gymnastics, making this likely the final opportunity for the Gymcats to show what the program is capable of accomplishing. Instead of letting the news discourage them, the team used it as motivation throughout the season.
“We were all really sad. I mean, it shouldn’t happen; they shouldn’t be taking away a sport. I feel like most of us are trying to fight for it, and some people are speaking at board meetings to fight for gymnastics,” senior captain Emily Peters said. “I think it definitely changed. I think we really just wanted to finish this, like, finish the season really strong, and make it a really memorable season.”
From the first meet, the Gymcats showed determination and consistency. Every routine mattered and every gymnast contributed points that helped lead the team toward victory. Long hours of practice, repeated routines and constant preparation pushed the teams to improve week after week.
“The biggest challenge we faced was everyone becoming comfortable with new skills,” junior Elise Bergoffen said. “Chemistry played a huge role in keeping us together because we all motivated each other. We always stayed positive and blasted pump-up music.”Â
The pressure of competing while knowing the future of the program is uncertain added even more emotion to the season. Gymnastics requires both mental and physical strength and the athletes had to stay focused despite the distractions surrounding the program. Team members supported one another through difficult practices and intense meets, helping create a close bond that became one of the team’s biggest strengths.
For many athletes, this season became about more than winning. It became about proving that gymnastics deserves recognition and support within MCPS athletics. The Gymcats demonstrated dedication, hard work and chemistry every time they competed. Their success showed the impact the program had on students and the school community.Â
Even with the uncertainty surrounding the future of gymnastics in MCPS, the Gymcats ended their season on top. Their division county titles reflect not only their talent, but also the hard work and determination they displayed this season. Regardless of what happens next, this team left behind a legacy that will be remembered at WJ for years to come.
