On Dec. 5, while students were hard at work, down the beltway and through snow-covered roads, one of the most highly anticipated events in the world was happening in our nation’s capital: the draw for the FIFA World Cup.
The 2026 edition of the famous soccer tournament is being held this summer in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. This upcoming tournament has already had a lot of publicity, even with months to go until it kicks off, and much of it is coming from off the field and even outside the soccer world.
The World Cup draw determined the group stage matchups for June. This year’s draw was the biggest yet, both figuratively and literally. It was held in the Kennedy Center and was turned into a large spectacle that included many celebrities, foreign dignitaries and world-renowned athletes. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also presented U.S. President Donald Trump with the first-ever FIFA Peace Prize. The spectacle nature of the draw led to the actual draw not starting until over an hour after originally planned.
The draw was also the biggest due to the tournament’s new format, upping the team count from 32 to 48 teams. This expanded format gave opportunities for countries such as Cape Verde, Jordan, Curaçao and Uzbekistan to make their World Cup debuts this summer. Notably, Curaçao is the smallest country to ever qualify, with a population of just over 150,000 people.
With regards to the draw itself, the 48 teams, 42 of which have already qualified, were split up into 12 groups of four teams each. The six remaining slots in the tournament will be determined in the next few months through playoff games between various nations on the brink of qualification.
As for the hosts, Mexico was drawn in a group with South Africa, South Korea and a European playoff that could find them facing either Denmark, North Macedonia, the Czech Republic or Ireland. It was also determined that the matchup between Mexico and South Africa will be the first match of the entire tournament, being played in Mexico City on June 11th.
The United States was drawn against Australia, Paraguay and another European playoff, with the emerging nation this time being either Turkey, Romania, Slovakia or Kosovo. The team has been under fire in recent years after a series of poor performances and a lackluster appearance as hosts of the Copa America last year. However, the team has had a bit more success in recent friendlies, with 2-1 wins against both Australia and Paraguay, as well as a statement 5-1 win against Uruguay.
The third and final host, Canada, was drawn in a group with Qatar, Switzerland and either Italy, Northern Ireland, Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although Canada had a disappointing World Cup return in Qatar in 2022, a promising showing at the Copa America in 2024 gives their fans some hope as they return as hosts.
Defending champions Argentina will begin their title defense on June 16th when they face off against Algeria in Kansas City, Missouri. Back in December 2022 in Qatar, Argentina reached their long-awaited return to the top of the soccer world after they defeated France in a thrilling final. Although it is still unclear whether Lionel Messi, considered by many to be the greatest soccer player of all time, will lace up his cleats for his final World Cup, the Argentina faithful still have their hopes held up high as they come off winning their second Copa America title in a row back in the summer of 2024.
One of the biggest favorites to win the World Cup is Spain, who are currently ranked first in the FIFA rankings and are coming off winning the European Championship back in 2024. The Spanish team will be bringing superstar Lamine Yamal along with them, who will only turn 19 six days before the final. The winger has made a name for himself both at his club, Barcelona, and in the European Championships, where he scored in the semi-final to help defeat France. Spain will start their World Cup journey against Cape Verde, with Saudi Arabia and Uruguay rounding out their group.
The World Cup festivities may have started in DC, but the end of the road will be at the World Cup final, being held on July 19th in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
