In recent years, the Washington Wizards have been one of the worst teams in the NBA. For context, the Wizards finished the 2023-2024 NBA season with a 15-67 record, which is absolutely devastating, but all of that can change soon.

The Washington Wizards recently made some huge changes to their roster aimed toward being better next season. In early January, the Wizards traded away CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert for All-Star point guard Trae Young. Trae Young is a Seasoned guard who is known for being a lights-out shooter, getting to the lane and making plays for his teammates. This is pivotal for the Wizards because they have lacked a consistent point guard for the past few years. The Wizards also have been utilizing point guard Sharife Cooper, giving him a second chance at the NBA after playing in the G-League and overseas. I think these Trae Young and Sharife Cooper will mesh perfectly together, as they both played for the Atlanta Hawks at the same time.

The Wizards also just traded away players like Khris Middleton and Marvin Bagley III in early February for stronger, more dominant players like Anthony Davis and D’Angelo Russell. Sadly, Russell isn’t expected to be on the roster for long and will not play a game with them. Aside from that, these trades are really good for the Wizards, but they are also a huge gamble. Young has suffered hard injuries that can affect his performance and Davis is extremely injury-prone and will likely be out for the majority of the time. If Davis and Young play a lot of games, he and 7-footer Alex Sarr will dominate the paint while Cooper and Young will facilitate and score, creating a great lineup that can slowly save the Wizards franchise.

On the other hand, most of the other teams in the NBA are so much better than the Wizards that this may not be enough. Teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Boston Celtics and the New York Knicks have been strong for a handful of seasons and will likely still crush the Wizards on the court.

Although the chances of the Wizards becoming huge contenders are slim, they will definitely see improvement in their record and may even end up having a winning season in the future. Although it will definitely take a few years of acquiring better players and making more roster changes, slowly but surely, the Wizards will become a better team.
