The Walter Johnson cheer team placed 5th out of 8 teams competing at counties, moving forward to regionals. As the cheer team was preparing, they faced an unexpected setback. Two of their main flyers, senior captains Renata Andrian and Lyla Cho, were sidelined by injuries just weeks before the competition.
Andrian suffered a twisted ankle during practice, while Cho sustained a concussion. Both injuries threatened to disrupt the team’s routines, missing valuable practice time to work on routines. But with determination and teamwork, they managed to make full recoveries in time to perform.
“Spraining my ankle during practice was definitely not only hard for me but also for my teammates, since we weren’t able to compete at invitationals a couple of days later,” Adrian said. “But when I came back, my stunt group and I worked so hard every day that we were able to get our skills back really quickly, and we felt really proud at Counties.”
Despite the challenges, the team continues to support both athletes throughout their recovery. Their drive and dedication inspired everyone to stay on track and push towards their final goals for the season.
“Getting two concussions was a big setback, especially mid-season, but it made me more determined to recover and come back stronger,” Cho said. “I reminded myself to take needed breaks because I wanted to be out there with my team again. Being cleared just in time for counties felt amazing, like all the patience and hard work finally paid off.”
The team continued to adjust their routines while Andrian and Cho recovered, showing dedication and resilience by keeping their focus on the competition even under pressure. The Wildcats continued to push themselves in practice, determined to be ready to compete.
Senior captains Shoshana Berger and Emily Peters emphasized teamwork and perseverance as being key to their practices leading up to Counties.
“We lost our sense of hope when they got injured, but their return gave us the motivation we needed to work harder than ever to put on our best performance at Counties and to be able to make it to regionals,” Berger said.
By the time Counties arrived, Andrian and Cho had been cleared to fly again, helping to boost the team’s morale and confidence. Facing adversity and these setbacks definitely helped the wildcats deliver a strong performance.
“It’s so nice to see the team come back from so many injuries; besides both of our main flyers, other teammates also faced injuries,” senior Sofia Jalil said. “So I am extremely proud of our team and the fact that we were able to compete so well at counties despite many challenges.”
