The Cats raced at the Polar Bear meet on Tuesday, Dec. 5 to start the 2023-2024 indoor track season. Even though this meet didn’t count towards their overall record, the Cats still came out strong. This meet took place outdoors because the usual indoor track venue is being resurfaced, so it was quite a chilly meet.
“I think the polar bear meet went well for the team as a whole, obviously it was outside and the times didn’t count for anything, so it was a super low pressure… but people still performed extremely well,” senior captain Mackenzie Raue said.
Additionally, the team dominated in all of the events and were top three for multiple races.
Many runners on track were also part of Cross Country, and runners such as Raue showed extensive improvement from their fall season. The Cats also have individual goals they want to achieve this season.
“I ran a 2:27 in the 800 which is a pretty solid start to the season because last year I would usually run around 2:30 during dual meets. Even though I had to run the 4×400 five minutes after the 800, I also still ended up getting a 63 which is very close to my usual times,” senior Zuzana Huserova said.
Even though the Cats want to have fun this season, they are a competitive crew. Returning members Mackenzie Raue, Zuzanna Hersorova, Carolyn Hultman and Megan Raue are 4×800 state champions and high school All-Americans.
“My goals for this season is to break the indoor mile record at 4:16 also to win states and become All-American with my 4×800 relay team,” senior captain Calix McCormick said.
The Wildcats have their next meet, the Grant Holloway Holiday Invitational, on Friday, Dec. 15 and Saturday, Dec. 16.
