The boys’ basketball team continues to build momentum halfway through the season, rising to a 9-4 overall record after two convincing victories against Clarksburg and Gaithersburg. With strong team chemistry and balanced scoring, the Cats are beginning to establish themselves as a serious contender to make a big run, heading into the second half of the season.
The Wildcats’ strong week began Jan. 20, with a dominant 74-50 non-conference win against Clarksburg. The game highlighted one of the team’s biggest strengths this season, that being their depth, as 10 out of 13 players that stepped onto the court scored. That, combined with the team’s fast-paced offense, allowed the Cats to set the tone and maintain control throughout all four quarters of their 20 point win.
“It felt good to have people start, come off the bench strong and be able to contribute to the team win,” senior Zaph Abbey said. “It is definitely what we are looking for heading back into conference play soon.”
Sophomore Carter Brooks led the team in points with 15, shooting an impressive 65% from the field. Brooks also contributed with four steals and four rebounds, making his presence felt on both ends of the court. Since joining the team midway through the season, Brooks has quickly become a valuable asset.
That momentum carried into a Friday night regional matchup, Jan. 24, on the road against Gaithersburg, where the team delivered another commanding win. The Cats defeated the Trojans 74-43, securing their ninth win of the season and extending their recent winning streak.
Sophomore forward Ngenzi Rugaba led the team with a career high 19 points and seven rebounds. Rugaba’s performance provided a major spark for the Wildcats, as he consistently attacked the basket and controlled the board.
The two wins capped off a strong midseason stretch for the program that has undergone significant change since last year. With new coaching staff and a reshaped roster, the Wildcats have worked hard to refine their identity through disciplined defense and unselfish offense.
“Our post-game team meals and bus rides have given us the experience on and off the court to be the best and helped our team chemistry improve immensely,” junior Aldrich Roales said.
As the semester comes to a close, the Wildcats are focused on finishing strong and carrying their momentum into conference play and the postseason.
“Having been on last year’s team with four wins, being 9-4 halfway through the season marks a new era where winning is the standard,” junior Connor Luecking said.
