With the increase in use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) globally, teachers should be taught how they are able to use AI in their classrooms to benefit students. Many people are constantly using AI in their daily lives, including students using it for academic purposes. Knowing this, why is the school system trying to impede students’ use of AI instead of helping them use it in a way that isn’t considered cheating? 

A lot of people consider that AI can only be used negatively, thinking it promotes cheating, but this isn’t necessarily the case. People can learn to use AI to give them advice and feedback on certain subjects. In order to get to this point and learn to use AI beneficially in school, the solution lies in making sure that teachers know how to use it and how it can be used to truly help their students. 

AI can be used in a lot of ways to benefit students and teachers. Students can use AI to ask it for a breakdown of assignments. If they aren’t sure what they need to do, they can ask it to explain the assignment thoroughly. Many might think a quick email to their teachers will do the trick, but not everyone gets a response back in a timely manner and it saves time for a student if they simply ask, “explain the question to me.” 

In addition, AI can help students with grammar on assignments. If a student is assigned to write an essay for homework, they can ask AI to read over a certain part of their essay and ask if it flows or if it can give them recommendations on how they can improve their essay and make it more grammatically correct. By asking for feedback on assignments, it will highlight certain parts of the students’ work that need to be revised and will eventually receive advice on how to revise accordingly. If a student asks AI to just write their assignment for them, it counts as academic dishonesty, which isn’t an acceptable use of AI. However, you would be able to ask for its advice and take its notes into consideration when redoing work, as long as your work is 100% original. 

Teachers are also able to benefit from the use of AI in school by offering administrative assistance. Teachers put in a lot of time and effort into their lesson plan, but AI can help decrease that workload significantly by giving them ideas on what they can actually do. Along with that, it can help find relevant materials for certain topics and help create new approaches to teaching complex topics. 

Having the school offer a course for teachers to learn how they are able to incorporate AI into their classroom is vital to the success of using artificial intelligence in lesson plans and assignments. By helping teachers find the benefit of this technology, they are able to use it for themselves as well as pass that on to their students and ensure that everyone uses it in a beneficial manner to assist them, rather than using it to cheat or having it do assignments.
