With only two meets left to go before the postseason, swim & dive is continuing their case for the premier team in the county. Coming off a clean sweep in the State Championship last year, the boys’ team finds themself undefeated with the Girls following close behind at 3-1.
The boys’ team is seeking to perform a rare accomplishment missed from last season to go undefeated. Beset by an early loss to Whitman and 3rd-place finish at Metros last season, this year’s team hopes to achieve perfection and achieve swim notoriety.
The girl’s team has found their identity after taking a huge hit in the loss of former seniors Addison Pollitt and Maddie Simmons, among others. Since their first loss to Churchill, they haven’t looked back and have gone undefeated.
“I think the season’s gone great,” senior captain Ashley Ayhick Wong said. “There’s a lot of team spirit and the whole team has worked together to be better.”
The team has had to rely on a next-swimmer-up mentality as new faces step up into leadership roles, continuing to chase the glory of last season while carving out their own path.
“It was really fun to win states and everything last year, so trying to do that again is motivation,” senior Owen Freidman said.
The team has been able to build camaraderie and rely on each other in times of need. From early practices to team dinners, team spirit is a major priority for the cats.
“I think we need to keep a positive attitude. I think we need to lift each other up. If someone doesn’t have a good swim just shrug it off and keep going,” Friedman said.
Making splashes in the pool, the dive team continues to be a strong point for the aquacats. The dive teams provide a unique advantage for teams in their ability to rack up points.
“I mean, it feels good leading the boys dive team and winning every single meet so far,“ junior Jack DiFrank said. “It’s actually really shocking because we only have two boy divers, which puts us at a major disadvantage against other teams, but, I mean, I think me and the other diver have good skill and are able to keep up with the other teams, even though they have more players.”
The team now faces a strong test in the Whitman Vikings, who bested the boys’ last year. Seeking revenge, the team is using the game as a boost of momentum starting to head into the playoff season.
“I think this week, we just need to go in with a better mindset and hopefully we can beat them,” sophomore Gus Conze said.
The hallmark event of the season, the Metros championship, will take place Feb. 4 for the divers, and Feb. 6-7 for the swimmers. Last year, the Girls’ were able to capture a first place title at Metros and the team will need all swimmers at their best if they seek to do the same.
Until then, both teams continue to hone their craft and stay focused.
“We need to work on more spirit. We have spirit, but not everybody participates. I think the boys and the girls can both win Metros,” Conze said.
