Several student organizations, including the Black Student Union and African Student Union, held WJ’s annual Black History Month assembly on Friday, Feb. 20 in the auditorium. The assembly showcased a wide variety of performances, including appearances from WJ’s Step Team and KPRO (WJ’s K-pop dance team), a fashion show inspired by African cultures and a choral arrangement of A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke, all of which helped convey the assembly’s overarching theme of Black unity. New to the assembly this year were two antagonists, figures in white masks who appeared on stage several times throughout the assembly to mock and criticize the performers before being unmasked and defeated by junior Jahiem Brooks at its conclusion. At the end of the assembly, the student performers took a bow and gathered at the center of the stage to dance together, a celebration which continued even as students began to exit the auditorium.
