WJ STAGE dips into the magical world of Hogwarts with “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”, a play written by Jack Thorne, stemming from an original story by J. K. Rowling. The play was a hit, selling 6 million tickets and becoming the highest grossing non-musical play of all time.
The play was created 19 years after the original series and follows stories of the main characters’ children, centering around an unlikely friendship between Harry Potter’s son, Albus Potter and Draco Malfoy’s son, Scorpious Malfoy.
Behind the scenes, STAGE Crew is working to bring the show to life. In his role as Stage Manager, senior Julian Isaac leads all parts of the production staff’s work. Junior Sadie Steenberge has many jobs during production: not only is she the Web Master, but she is also a Student Technical Director along with senior Nikki Mosaddegh. They each have very important roles.
“I oversee the technical aspects of the stage,” Steenberge said. “I help with the design process, I help make sure stuff gets done and stuff’s productive.”
The choice of Harry Potter as the play was met with a lot of excitement from many students, including crew members.
“I was so excited. I was such a Harry Potter nerd when I was a kid,” Steenberge said.
WJ is the second school in Maryland to perform this play, so they are able to bring their own unique perspectives.
“I’m definitely excited for them to see how the cast handles the magic,” Mosaddegh said. “There’s a lot of really cool, fun scenes that we’ve worked out with them that I think will be very, very exciting to watch to see how the magic happens.”
“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 7-8 and Nov. 14-15, with one on Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.
