The Super Bowl is the most anticipated event of the football season that sends everyone into a frenzy. Super Bowl LIX is set to take place on Feb. 9 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Super Bowl will be played by the reigning Super Bowl champs, the Kansas City Chiefs (going for a three-peat) and the Philadelphia Eagles. The kickoff will commence at 5:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on Fox.
On Sept. 9, 2024, it was announced that Kendrick Lamar was chosen as the halftime performer for this upcoming Super Bowl. He previously performed for the 2022 Super Bowl with Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Dr. Dre and Mary J. Blige. SZA is confirmed to be joining Lamar as a guest for the Super Bowl halftime show. Lamar and SZA announced on Dec. 3, 2024 that they are kicking off their 2025 Grand National Tour in North America. The end of his upcoming tour will finish in Washington D.C. at North West Stadium.
“I feel like Kendrick Lamar would have to play all of his most popular songs to live up to the expectations of having a good superbowl halftime show,” senior Carly Hangliter said.
This has been a great season for the hometown Washington Commanders, making the playoffs for the first time since 2006 and winning their first playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Commanders won the game with a field goal that doinked off the up right and fell into the goal. The Commanders played the Detroit Lions on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Lions home stadium and won the game entering their only NFC Championship game since 1991.
“My preferred matchup would be the Commanders beating anyone, especially the Bills. I like Josh Allen, but I have a friend who’s a Bills fan so I want to beat them,” senior Zinovi Knizhnik said.
After splitting the first two meetings with the Eagles during the regular season, the Commaners played them for the NFC Championship and were defeated.
Since the tragedy that took place on New Year’s Eve on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, the Super Bowl security team has been adding a SWAT team, armored vehicles, special agents on roof tops, government surveillance drones and more security cameras as extra security measures to make sure everyone stays safe.
Many people have been discussing where or not the Super Bowl will be safe for fans since the truck attack. The accident took place on New Year’s Eve on Bourbon Street in New Orleans which killed 15 people.
“I think they should put more cops around and maybe a curfew and for the game to have a lot more people around to make sure everything is safe,” junior Will Menard said.
Junior Zach Nagurney agreed about safety precautions for the upcoming Super Bowl in New Orleans.
“I would like the city of New Orleans to hire more security, make sure no thugs get around and I just don’t want the Super Bowl to get messed up, especially Kendrick Lamar getting killed at the halftime show, that would be a bummer,” Nagurney said.
Kansas City has won the last two Super Bowls, one of which was against Philadelphia. If the Chiefs win, they will be the only team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
