Junior Marie Boy and sophomore Zoe Rojas triumphed in the girls’ tennis state championship on May 15, qualifying for the semi-finals along with just four other teams across the state. The duo beat the Parkville duo of Anastasiia Biriukova and Anna Magar in the state quarterfinals following their previous regional tournament, qualifying them for a spot in states in just their first season sharing the court together.
“We were happy because it was our first time playing together, and we had never played together before. So we had good communication and we understood each other on the court,” Rojas said.
The duo was the sole team to represent WJ in the state championship, although they were defeated in the second round by Richard Montgomery pair Ellen Bu and Jiajing Zheng. Among the other successes of the girls’ tennis team was in the county finals, where the duo pair of juniors Alyssa Thoms and Elizabeth Martin triumphed over Churchill in their county finals game.
The team faced ups and downs throughout the season, but they proved resilient and showed major results through repetition and hard work. Undoubtedly, the future is bright for WJ Girls’ tennis.
“So firstly, we had a lot of practice together, we first played counties and then regionals, and we won regionals. I’m happy and it’s my first time playing states with Marie, and I hope next year we play together,” Rojas said.
The duo pair and the team as a whole made their high school proud with an 11-1 winning record: accomplishments achieved through repetition and hard work, a hallmark of WJ athletics.
