The girls’ tennis team has closed off an extraordinary regular season, finishing with a record of 10-1. With fierce determination, teamwork, outstanding depth and talent across the lineup, the Wildcats proved that they are one of the best teams in the county.
The journey to the title started strong, as WJ opened the season with a commanding 7-0 sweep over Montgomery Blair, followed by a 6-1 win against Damascus and another 7-0 shutout versus Rockville. Their early dominance set the tone for the season, and the Wildcats kept rolling with a 6-1 victory over rival B-CC and a 5-2 win against Churchill.
The Wildcats faced a tough challenge on the road against Richard Montgomery, but their toughness prevailed. They scraped out a 5-2 win to continue their undefeated 6-0 record..
“Starting strong felt good; it instilled confidence in us for later games. Moving forward, we knew we were a dominant team,” junior captain Elizabeth Martin said.
So far, the team’s only setback came against undefeated Wootton, a 6-1 loss that tested their resilience.
“After a tough loss, no one blamed anyone else or got negative, we pulled each other closer. Instead of turning on each other, we lifted each other,” junior Emma Klimek said. “We stayed positive, and that support and trust made a huge difference. It kept the energy good and made us want to work even harder for ourselves and each other.”
The Wildcats took the loss to heart, responding with a dominant 5-2 win over Poolesville. They finished the season with authority, defeating Quince Orchard 6-1, Wheaton 7-0, and Northwest 5-2 to clinch the county title.
Depth is a huge key to the Wildcats’ success. Senior captain Mia Milicevic leads the singles category, with junior Marie Boy (Singles 2), senior Miram Elag (Singles 3), and senior Angela Lynch (Singles 4) following shortly behind. In the doubles category, senior Christina Simpson and sophomore Zoe Rojas lead the pack in the Doubles 1 category, with Martin and junior Alyssa Thoms (Doubles 2) and junior Sonia Gass and Klimek (Doubles 3) also backing the green and white.
With a county championship under their belt, the Wildcats are setting their sights even higher. Confidence is soaring as they prepare for postseason tournaments, and they are determined to build on their incredible season.
The Wildcats have six participants in the county championship, two doubles and two singles. Girls’ #1 singles competitor Milicevic is the fourth seed, matching up against Samantha Taccheetti from Blake. Shortly behind in the Girls’ #2 singles category is sixth seed Boy, looking to secure another county championship. Elag secured herself a spot in the Girls’ #3 singles, as the third seed, facing off against Lauren Ibecache from Damascus.
Martin and Thoms start the tournament with a bye, attempting to defend their undefeated record in the Girls’ #2 doubles bracket. Klimek and Gass have a spot in the Girls’ #3 doubles bracket, securing a bye due to an accomplished 6-2 record.
The Wildcats’ first matches begin this afternoon, as they are ready to defend their 2024 MCPS County Championship.
