A group of seniors triumphantly celebrate their class’ victory in the class tug-of-war. It is the fourth consecutive year the seniors have won the fall tug-of-war.

Girls’ soccer senior captain Ella Hoban introduces the team’s 10 other seniors. The team chose “80s workout video” as their theme for the pep rally.

Members of the WJ drumline play their instruments as students enter the stadium. The drumline and pep band played WJ’s Wildcat fight song “Across the Field” along with assorted pop hits.

A group of freshmen compete in tug-of-war, shouting to work together. The battle against the sophomores was the longest of the three matchups and resulted in an upset freshmen victory, setting up the freshmen for a clash with the seniors.

Boys’ soccer sophomore Natnaelle (Natty) Mekonnen triumphantly enters the field on the shoulders of junior Nicholas Cornejo Zuniga, clad in a hot dog suit. Mekonnen is one of two sophomores on the team of mostly upperclassmen.

The step team breaks through a paper banner, dressed in their distinctive emerald green uniforms. Though several prominent seniors graduated last year, their energetic performance was met with whistles and cheers.

Senior cross country captain Helen Besch screams into a microphone, exhorting the crowd to come to their next competition. The boys and girls’ teams both placed fourth.

Members of WJ’s Ultimate Frisbee team, the Pitchers, introduce themselves to the crowd. The Pitchers were one of a few student groups in the pep rally that were not officially in the athletics program.

Girls’ volleyball seniors Sofia Silberfield, Annabelle Kehoe, Ariel Mazor, Claire Kuemerrele and Stella Lichter introduce themselves to the crowd. The volleyball team chose “minions” as their theme.

The poms team performs an expressive choreographed routine. The popular “Snake” component elicited wild cheers from the audience.

Senior cheer captain Candace Nsoga-Mahob waves to the audience as she advertises the team’s next performance. Cheer are the defending regional champions, and also regularly perform at football games.

Pep band director Dr. Michael Helgerman directs the band while calling out. Pep band performs at pep rallies, football games and other major school events.

Boys’ soccer senior Fraol Kedebe breaks through a paper banner as his team makes their entrance. Each team ran onto the field to introduce their captains and seniors and encourage students to come out and support the team at their games.

A group of seniors pull on a tug-of-war rope with all their might, bracing themselves against the turf. Unsurprisingly, the seniors retained their undefeated status.

Seniors, wearing their class color green, shout as members of their class compete in tug-of-war against the junior class. The seniors defeated the juniors and freshmen to win the class competition.

Senior Seyun Park triumphantly returns to The Pitch in his fourth and final year, this year as Editor-in-Chief, managing content both online and in print. When he isn't fixing tabs on Adobe InDesign, messing around with SNO widgets, or dropping horrible sports takes in class, you can find Seyun on the tennis court, crushing the daily New York Times games or fanatically supporting the Washington Caps and Nats.
Seyun is also a 2024 National Scholastic Press Association Multimedia Journalist of the Year Finalist.

Junior Meher Parsinni is the Photography Editor for The Pitch. Outside of The Pitch, Meher crochets and enjoys watching films with her cats.

Joshua Singer, Print Editor-in-Chief
Senior Joshua Singer is elated to be returning as Print Editor-in-Chief in his fourth year on The Pitch. Josh began his career with The Pitch during the second semester of his freshman year as a staff writer before becoming Print Sports Editor his sophomore year and Print Editor-in-Chief his junior year. Josh generally writes for the sports and news sections and has covered topics ranging from WJ's gender distribution in AP classes to school safety issues to profiles on athletes and coaches. As a junior, Josh co-created The Pitch Radio Network, which broadcasts WJ sports live at wjpitch.mixlr.com. This past summer, Josh attended the Medill-Northwestern Journalism Institute where he enhanced his journalistic skills with the goals of making his senior year his best yet and furthering his career aspirations in journalism. During his free time, Josh enjoys running, playing guitar and announcing sports.
