This past Friday, Oct. 13, Boygenius released their second EP, “the rest.” The EP follows their already beloved debut album, “the record.” Boygenius is composed of singer-songwriters Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, three already acclaimed artists in their own right. Their work feels complete and brilliant, with lyrics that pull at one’s soul in all of the right ways.
Lyrics are imperative when listening to Boygenius’ work. The care and investment put into them is clear. With distinct imagery and fascinating motifs, “the rest” more than lives up to the standard set by “the record” and the first Boygenius EP, “boygenius.”
On “the rest,” Boygenius’ crooning tones meld together over relaxed, strummed-out instrumentals. On “Black Hole” in particular, the instrumental takes center-field, powered by a drum-driven beat and reverberating bassline. Harmonies also carry the EP’s tracks; all of the artists are incredible when singing solo, of course, but Boygenius are at their peak when Bridgers, Dacus and Baker meld their voices.
The two standout tracks on the EP are “Afraid of Heights” and “Voyager.” On “Afraid of Heights,” Dacus leads the way, with Bridgers and Baker lending their vocals to the song’s chorus and outro. It features a dreamy instrumental and heartfelt lyrics, in which Dacus reflects on a past relationship. On “Voyager,” Bridgers sings, almost at a murmur, over a softly-strummed instrumental. Dacus and Baker supplement the instrumental with faint hums. The track is floaty and airy, with the lyrics and vocals intertwining perfectly with the background instruments and melodies.
