Tom Martin is a Foundations of Technology teacher, cross-country coach, assistant coach for indoor track and head coach for spring track. In the upcoming school year, he will also teach advanced technology courses.
What are your interests outside of school?
TM: Traveling…I am an outdoorsman. I particularly [enjoy] bow hunting. Bow hunting and also target archery.
What are some of the places you have been on vacation?
TM: I went to the Virgin Islands last year, St. Johns. I’ve been to England. I’ve been to Europe [and] Canada. I’m planning on doing a lot more traveling in the upcoming years.
Of the places where you have traveled, which has been your favorite?
TM: St. Johns in the Virgin Islands.
How did you get into archery and hunting?
TM: I’ve been doing it since I was a kid. I’ve hunted with [science teacher] Mr. [Tom] Rogers since I was 15 [years old].
What are some of your favorite weekend activities?
TM: Track meets and cross-country meets. I’d say over 50 percent of my weekends are taken up by that.
Describe a typical Saturday.
TM: Get on a bus with a bunch of kids, go to a meet, yell at them, tell them they did great and come home. I [also] like to go out to dinner and things like that.
What is one thing that students may not know about you?
TM: I played rugby for four years; I played in England. And that’s about all I’m gonna let them know.
How does it feel to have lived in the Washington, D.C. area your entire life?
TM: It’s kind of rare. I’ve had the advantage of being able to watch the entire Washington area change over time. Unless you live in one place all the time, you don’t see the change. I’ve seen [it go] from a really small town atmosphere to this big city.
What are some things you would like to accomplish in your lifetime?
TM: Climb Mt. Everest. Well, it’s either that, or fight a grizzly bear with a knife. I haven’t decided on which yet.
