What show adresses the most relevant, quirky, and controversial topics existing in this day and age? Of course, it’s ABC’s “Modern Family.”
This show puts a fun and lighthearted twist on many topics that would cause conservative viewers to squeal. From gay dads with an Asian baby girl to an elderly man with a gorgeous younger Hispanic wife, “Modern Family” has all of the elements of a show that parents might ban their children from seeing. However, this show is actually quite family friendly in its content, always keeping it PG.
The family in “Modern Family” are a few notches away from a protypical American family, but the problems with which they deal are surprisingly universal. The three families in this show are simple on the surface, but as we get to know them, they have relationships as complicated as your family or mine. Intriguingly enough, all of these families are related. The Dunphys include Phil, Claire, Haley, Alex and Luke. They represent the “traditional” American family. Phil, the striving patriarch, always tries to do right by his family. Claire, the matriarch, is uptight and tries very hard to keep her family together. Haley, the eldest of the three siblings, is the “typical” teen who wishes her parents weren’t so embarrassing. Alex, the middle child, is the brainiac of the family who is unfortunately oft-stuck in the middle of awkward situations. The youngest of the three children, Luke, is the energetic, curious child who has severe ADHD.
Claire Dunphy’s dad is Jay Prichett. Jay takes life seriously and has issues with Phil’s femininity, as he often thinks Phil is not “man” enough to head the Dunphy family. Jay is married to a much younger Colombian woman, Gloria Delgado, who has just as much spice as the popular Colombian dish, Lechona. This spunk has been passed down to her son, Manny, who is as romantic and idealistic as Jay is harsh and realistic.
The Pritchett and Dunphy families are also connected to the lives of Jay’s son Mitchell, Claire’s brother, and his partner Cameron. Mitchell and “Cam” have an adorable Vietnamese baby girl, Lily, and have recently decided to adopt a baby boy to complete their family.
So, basically, “Modern Family” is an intricately woven basket of three simple yet complicated families. This intricacy gives it a nice bout of comedy while addressing everyday problems as well, drawing viewers in more and more to the intense laughter that is comic relief to the awkwardness and annoyance that is real life. “Modern Family” is currently in the midst of its second season.
