MCPS announced it will close 13 of 25 high schools, including Walter Johnson, starting Tuesday, due to a lack of federal funding caused by cuts by the Department of Governmental Efficiency.
DOGE, as the newly-formed advisory group is commonly known, is led by tech giant Elon Musk, and has rapidly garnered headlines for cuts in other federal agencies like the Department of Health and Human Services, cutting employees, contracts and other wasteful and fraudulent spending. Tasked by President Donald Trump, Musk and his team have rapidly entered agencies and instituted mandatory cuts.
While the Department of Education had already undergone a round of DOGE inspections, MCPS saw its own DOGE task force arrive at Central Offices on Monday, March 31, where inspectors revealed that a large portion of MCPS’ $3.3 billion budget goes to buying snacks and a New York Times Games subscription. DOGE determined that the district could save upwards of $2 billion per year by closing 13 of the district’s 25 high schools.
Of those 25 high schools, DOGE inspectors identified Walter Johnson as one to close due to its extremely poor standardized testing performance and unsafe bathroom conditions. All 3,000 WJ students will be randomly sorted into one of the other 12 remaining high schools.
“Obviously, it sucks we have to do this. But the DOGE presented us with two options: either close the schools or give up our New York Times Games subscriptions. And that was not a hard choice to make,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Taylor said.
Other schools on the list to close include Bethesda neighbors like Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Thomas S. Wootton and Richard Montgomery High Schools. Taylor cited overcrowding at these schools as another big reason behind their closure.
“If you’re looking at a school that is overcrowded, what’s the easiest way to solve that without paying for an expensive addition? Just close the school. No more overcrowding,” Taylor explained.
The remaining 13 high schools will each now operate at anywhere between 2000 and 5000 seats over capacity. To account for this, administrators have implemented plans to hold classes in the auditorium, the stadium and on school buses.
“We have this massive fleet of school buses. They cost us a lot of money, but these bus drivers are only getting paid for a couple of hours of work, and the buses sit around most of the day,” MCPS Deputy Chief of Facilities Adnan Mamoom explained. “So to get around this, who better than a part-time bus driver to teach AP-level calc?”
For WJ students, the closure will mean an increase in commute time of anywhere between 10 minutes and five hours, depending on traffic. However, students recognize the importance of the cost-saving measure.
“MCPS provides nothing less than a world-class education. Asking us to take a couple of extra hours per day to get to school is not a big ask, and honestly, I think it builds character,” one WJ student said.
DOGE has also mandated that MCPS close every other middle school and every third elementary school.
“What we are building here is an efficient system. Why have the taxpayers pay for school when the students and their families can do it themselves? Taxpayers save money, families get the schools that they want — it’s the pinnacle of American capitalism,” Musk said. “This way, everyone wins.”

Well done. I found this randomly while searching for something else and thought it was a funny read. Despite the obvious satire, this is well-written. It’s nice to know students at WJ can write this well, and are obviously getting a good education despite painting over the Mighty Moo. Keep up the good writing. I enjoyed it.
Anonymous • Apr 5, 2025 at 4:14 pm
Hahaha, nice one. As an alumni of WJ I love that the students still maintain a sense of humor and wit. Don’t listen to the sensitive ones, they are part of the problem in America at the moment.
Life’s tough, get a helmet 🙂

It’s the students and the parents not the school
Bad Joke • Apr 4, 2025 at 11:29 am
This was a lazy and unfunny April Fools’ attempt. If you’re going to write satire, at least make it clever. Dragging politics and making it sound like a deranged conspiracy theory isn’t comedy—it’s just bad writing.
Dan • Apr 4, 2025 at 9:32 am
What’s not a joke is the poor performance of Maryland schools overall. Only 19% of Baltimore city children are able to read at grade level. And DOGE couldn’t make schools any worse if they tried. The real problem is that the one party monopoly rule of the Democrats are more about their continued dominance and power and money that supplies them than they are about educating our children. And with that aim, they just indoctrinate the kids with Communist ideologies so they won’t know any better.
Andrea • Apr 4, 2025 at 8:15 am
You had me going at first. Funny!!!
Anonymous • Apr 3, 2025 at 11:29 pm
I can laugh at this! What’s not funny is from a teachers perspective is the turmoil and uncertainly we go through everyday not knowing if kids will be provided what they need or that we could actually lose our jobs.
M • Apr 3, 2025 at 7:43 pm
The fact that people actually thought this could be even remotely true and possible makes me worry about Americans. On the other side, calm down people and laugh whenever you can!
Edgyone • Apr 3, 2025 at 11:15 pm
On the other side of what? Absolute idiocy?
Anonymous • Apr 4, 2025 at 9:28 am
I laughed so hard at this, that the dog started barking.😂😂😂😂😂😂
TJ • Apr 3, 2025 at 7:01 pm
This was pretty good lol. But dang I was thinking about what if WJ actually closed down 🤔 all those experiences. Gone.
Mo • Apr 3, 2025 at 5:06 pm
Booooo… we see who this paper supports by the way it written. “Kids understand….” “no prob with addtl commute “; “Learning on school buses” and displacement of 2,000 to 5,000. This is ok?! This is understandable?! And all for NY Times Games?! Insanity!!!
Anonymous • Apr 3, 2025 at 2:40 pm
Children reading this may have panic attacks or are crying. This isn’t really funny at all.
Anonymous • Apr 3, 2025 at 3:46 pm
You should try reading the whole article
Anonymous • Apr 3, 2025 at 8:33 pm
Agree. Not funny. Needed to let folks know at the end it was a joke for April fool’s day.
Will • Apr 4, 2025 at 9:19 am
That’s doubtful, whats worse is adults like you projecting your anxiety onto children rather than recognizing the creative and topical writing.
Mi No • Apr 3, 2025 at 1:37 pm
Brilliant, with panache. Had to do a double take; and sure enough satire. You have a lot of the liberal search engines posting this a real breaking news. That is a mark of success.
JS • Apr 3, 2025 at 2:47 pm
It wasn’t brilliant because so much of it didn’t make sense. Just a lame joke.
Alan • Apr 4, 2025 at 2:15 am
That’s a lie. I haven’t seen this posted anywhere. Go back to sleeping in Putin’s lap.
Louise Golder • Apr 3, 2025 at 1:24 pm
Brilliant! Made us laugh & laugh! Lots of talent there! Good job! It’s a good thing to make people laugh! Thanks for sharing!
CC • Apr 3, 2025 at 1:15 pm
You could have ended the piece noting that it was satirical and an April fools joke. Definitely not funny in our current political climate. Shame on you WJ.
Millie H • Apr 3, 2025 at 2:30 pm
This wasn’t funny. Not everything on April 1 is a joke… It should have labeled this as satire.
Not Elon, maybe • Apr 3, 2025 at 8:00 pm
Satire and truth are harder to distinguish from each other in recent years, and that’s what makes this so brilliantly hilarious.
Anon • Apr 4, 2025 at 9:22 am
Levity during trying times is one of the most time honored and successful ways to get through these periods. The Pitch can’t solve the problems of today but bringing a smile to some peoples faces is a wonderful contribution and frankly the most that can be asked of high school students
Victor Delclos • Apr 3, 2025 at 6:04 pm
The last paragraph, in italics, states:

Walter Johnson • Apr 3, 2025 at 1:13 pm
This was hilarious. I kept getting it yesterday (April 1st) but it wouldn’t open (error 404).
I even showed it to my high school aged kids and they loved it. Without even getting the text it was obviously a spoof. The only things better than the article are the responses. Priceless! You guys must be spoofing too right? No way you let your derangement overtake your rational thought process right?
Martin • Apr 3, 2025 at 12:23 pm
Many a true word said but in jest!
Paul • Apr 3, 2025 at 1:04 pm
This is brilliant. So many easily offended people in here can’t take a joke. It had me going the first few paragraphs before I realized it was a satire. Very create. The student who wrote this deserves an A in AP English!
Sue • Apr 3, 2025 at 11:46 am
I think this is a great demonstration of how absurd the recent cuts and slashes to the Federal offices and workers have been. Well done. I’m a recently retired Fed and know many folks who have lost their Federal jobs. I am not the least bit offended by this satire. Rather, I’m encouraged that students are paying attention.
Courtney Kasprzyk • Apr 3, 2025 at 11:41 am
This was an April fools joke . A disgusting april fools joke by the high-school. As alumni I am not happy with this joke as so much is being closed down. Shame on the pitch.
Kristi Hilbrandt • Apr 3, 2025 at 1:16 pm
Agree, not funy.
Anon • Apr 4, 2025 at 9:30 am
As an alumni I am proud of the student writers doing their best to make light of trying times. Making light humor of trying times is an important life skill. Anxiety and doubt don’t help, acknowledgement and understanding of the difficulties face by those in past and the mechanisms they used to ultimately prevail is more useful.
Anonymous • Apr 3, 2025 at 11:21 am
It makes no sense! You’re going to solve overcrowding by closing nearly 60 percent of the High Schools! Where are these kids supposed to go? On the side walks!! There is nothing about this that is fair or justified!!
Joy • Apr 4, 2025 at 7:13 am
The article is an April fool’s joke. Read it all the way to the end. It’s not at all a funny joke, but whoever wrote this thinks it’s funny.
Anonymous • Apr 3, 2025 at 11:06 am
Nice Satire. Haters going to hate.
Prince • Apr 3, 2025 at 10:55 am
Sounds all too real to be a joke due to the the DOGE situation…
Gram • Apr 3, 2025 at 10:44 am
School closures, lack of inclusion, threats to libraries… all too real lately. Not such a joke.
Anonymous • Apr 2, 2025 at 12:58 pm
Ha! That was a good laugh.
V • Apr 2, 2025 at 11:08 am
Got me until the snacks and NY Times game subscription. Then I knew it had to be a joke.
P • Apr 2, 2025 at 9:02 am
Happy April Fools Day.
Anonymous • Apr 2, 2025 at 7:37 am
Genius!!!!!
Anonymous • Apr 2, 2025 at 11:41 am
Maybe not the best time for a joke like this considering the very real fear and hardships facing people in the DMV right now.
Anonymous • Apr 4, 2025 at 8:29 am
Honestly, in hard times like this, we either laugh or cry. It seems the Pitch chose to laugh, and I’m cool with that.
Anon • Apr 4, 2025 at 9:33 am
It is the best time, laughter is a great medicine. 17 year olds can’t solve these problems (they didn’t create them), but putting a brief smile on some peoples faces is the most that can be asked. Well done!
Char • Apr 2, 2025 at 6:51 am
Due to our current and on going political climate and world of alternative facts and well (Kayne being Kanye), it wasn’t initially clear that your news story about Walter Johnson was not factual but solely for entertainment purposes. Please, in the future, note that some where in the story.

Grow up
Jacob Siegel • Apr 2, 2025 at 12:11 am

Clearly an April Fools joke

Did the DOGE doofuses happen to check on whether there is ANY extra room for all these students at any other MCPS high school?!? There is NOT!
DOGE = Doofuses Optimally Go Extinct!!

Did the DOGE doofuses happen to check to see if there is ROOM at ANY other MCPS high school for these students. Duh… there is not!!
DOGE = Doofuses Optimally Go Extinct!!!
J porter • Apr 2, 2025 at 12:36 pm
That was a total waste of space and time. I’m sure the people who were fired don’t think this is funny.
Jerry • Apr 3, 2025 at 1:01 pm
Looks like you all fell for an April Fool joke. Did you all check it out first?
Joann • Apr 3, 2025 at 3:09 pm
This article should have ended with April Fool. It should NOT have popped up on my Google search! There is enough misinformation. With all the daily insane announcements we don’t need a fake one!
