On March 24, a couple of the G-floor bathrooms were administered experimental Bidets by the MCPS Advocacy group ALSL (Advanced Luxury in School Lavatories). The purpose of the program was to survey student reactions before continuing implementation to the rest of the bathrooms in the school.
“After a grueling campaign, we are proud to announce that our fundraiser for the first MCPS bidets was a success. This is the first step in our school-wide plan to improve students’ bathroom experience,” the ALSL said in a post about the initiative.
The bidets are intended to help students feel clean and comfortable after using the school bathrooms. The ALSL’s purpose was due to some students avoiding using the bathroom at school because they think of them as unclean. This leads to students forcing themselves to wait to relieve themselves until they get home from school. For those who don’t go immediately home once the bell rings, the time spent at school can be increasingly grueling.
“I spent the majority of my time in school since I participated in a variety of clubs, events, and extracurricular activities. While I love having school spirit, I’m not exactly enthusiastic about using the restroom here at school. I’ll admit it, I have my own bidet at home and don’t like going to the bathroom without one. I was so excited when I heard that there might be bidets added to the bathrooms, and I now go at school about twice a day,” an anonymous student said.
The ALSL’s initiative has been receiving a lot of support from students at WJ. With the new publicity and funding, they hope to expand the program to the rest of the bathrooms within the school.
“After the immense success and support for the bidets, we are now in the process of communicating with school officials to make this bathroom luxury a schoolwide standard. We also hope to start implementing some of our other, lesser known programs, such as our skin and hair care product dispensers to help students relax between classes,” The ALSL said.
The ALSL is already receiving support to give our school bathrooms the glow they deserve.
“I need more change like this. Every bathroom has this bare-minimum feel to it, but when I saw the bidet in the bathroom downstairs, I got so excited. I think all bathrooms should have these kinds of things. It’s a sign of respect for students. It also prevents people from wasting toilet paper and makes sure students get clean,” sophomore Jonas Lidman said.
