The girls’ basketball team’s season is underway, as the team went undefeated in their first four games.
With victories against Richard Montgomery 53-36, Kennedy 62-28, Damascus 60-44 and Gaithersburg 73-41, the Cats outscored each of their opponents by at least 16 points.
“(Our season) is going really well, we’re working as a team and we’re passing the ball around a lot and facilitating it,” sophomore guard Gabby Buggs said.
The undefeated set of games has given the Cats a morale boost, as WJ went 2-2 last year against the same four opponents to start the season.
“We’ve been working really well as a team, which we’ve struggled in the past to do. But our practices have been going well and it has shown in the games,” junior guard Elizabeth Martin said. “Last year we lost our first game. It’s been a really good feeling, knowing how hard our team has worked.”
The Cats believe that teamwork and communication are paramount in order to have a productive season.
“We’ve been playing really well as a team, and we’re all just learning off of each other and getting better each practice,” junior forward Emilia Starzyk said. “One thing we definitely need to work on is passing the ball during games and looking for the open shot instead of just being selfish and trying to shoot the ball.”
Despite the success early on, the season won’t get any easier for WJ. Before winter break, the Cats will face off against two currently undefeated teams. On Dec. 18, the Cats will travel for a 7:15 p.m. tipoff at Clarksburg High School (3-0) before facing off in a marquee home matchup with B-CC High School (4-0) on Dec. 20 at 5:30 p.m.
The team hopes they can let the good times roll as they look to ride their momentum into the rest of the season. Starzyk has lots of faith and optimism that the Cats can do just that.
“I’m really excited for this season,” Starzyk said. “I think we’re going to get really far and we’re going to go undefeated.”
