After being handed only two losses in the regular season, the girls’ tennis team adds on to what has been an excellent season. In the playoffs, the team added a county championship to their season resume.

“It felt great [to win counties], as a team it was a great win for us, and it hasn’t happened in a few years. So it was great for our coach and us as well, we really came together as a team,” junior Mia Milicevic said.

Heading into the final day of the county championship, the Wildcats and the Churchill Bulldogs found themselves both with 16 points each, one point behind Whitman High School with 17. But on that final day of the tournament, the Wildcats had three of their four finalists win, securing the championship title.

“It was really exciting, because we weren’t expecting it at first. Not all of us won counties because some of the schools beat us. A lot of us were in the finals, and a lot of us won,” sophomore Marie Boy said.

The Cats were able to score points in the end of the tournament, securing their counties victory.

Sophomore Marie Boy serves to her opponent in the first round of regionals. Boy, along with her partner Mia Milicevic, went on to win the Girls’ Doubles championship in regions and will advance to states.

“I was really proud of how the girls played. I give them a lot of credit, there were times that I had no idea what to expect, especially with the new faces [on the team this year]. In the end, they came through on the final day, they did everything that they needed to do,” head coach Mitch Duque said.

But the victories kept on coming for WJ. After counties, both Boy and Milicevic competed in the regional girls’ doubles bracket. They won all three of their matches, beating each opponent in straight sets. The three matchups were against Quince Orchard (6-2, 6-4), Walt Whitman (7-5, 6-4) and B-CC (6-1, 6-3), en route to a regional title championship.

“I think it was definitely chemistry, last minute chemistry with my partner Marie. We weren’t really close last year, but this year we got a lot closer, and especially during regionals we hung out a bit, talked game plan and practiced a lot. We had a fun celebration after we won, and it was great,” Milicevic said.

The region victory didn’t come without some hurdles. In particular, the semifinals match against Whitman was a close match with some close points.

“We had a really tough match in the semis, and it got heated, there were some line calls that were wrong. Some cheating, some yelling, but in the end we pulled through,” Milicevic said.

Also during regions, senior Sky Carter and junior Brady McBride lost in their final match in the mixed doubles tournament. Boy and Milicevic will look to continue their run into the state tournament.

With the season almost in the rearview mirror, the team reflects on an incredible run.

“I think our whole season was really good, and it was overall just a great season. The whole team was there to support all of us in the finals, so it was just a good end of the season bonding experience for sure,” Boy said.
