The girls’ tennis team currently has a 8-0 record. They bounced back from their 3-4 loss to the Potomac School in a scrimmage on September 18 and won their next three games. They beat Richard Montgomery 4-3, Wheaton 6-1 and Churchill 5-2. They also ended up losing to Good Counsel 8-1, but it was just a scrimmage so it did not count against their record.

Coach Mitchell Duque wants to focus to continue to focus on improving the doubles teams during practice as they are one of the main reasons for the loss.

“All of our doubles teams are not executing on game days,” Duque said. “Their margin for error is very low to begin with and if you don’t take advantage of opportunities when you have them then it results in losses.”

However, junior Stacy Ternovskaia is not worried about the loss because the team is resilient and has a positive outlook.

“We weren’t really too affected by our loss to Potomac,” Ternovskaia said. “We know we all tried our best, especially our number 2, Lea Kasonovich, she had a really close match. As a team, I don’t think we’ve ever come into our matches thinking ‘we’re going to lose today.’ We’re a very positive team in that way.”

On September 22, against Wheaton, freshman Sloane Morra played a tough match against the defending state champion. The game was very close early on, but in the end Morra ended up losing 2-6, 0-6. The rest of WJ’s players won their matches. When WJ played Churchill on Septermber 26, Jessica Fatemi, Lea Kosanovich, Sloane Morra, and Stacy Ternovskaia swept their opponents in singles matches. Both doubles teams played close three game sets.

Throughout the remainder of this season, Duque wants the players to make some changes in order to improve their play.

“I’d like for all of our players to minimize their unforced errors and play up to their potential at each match,” Duque said.
