Coed golf picked up their second win of the season last Monday, moving their record to to 2-16 on the season. WJ finished with 163 strokes, just one shy of their season best of 162.  Their performance was good enough for a third place finish.  They edged out BCC who shot 164, but finished well behind Sherwood who shot 150 and Wootton who shot 149.  

Despite their poor win-loss record, the progress the team is making is evident in their improving scores each match.

“[The last match] went solid.  It was good to get another win,” sophomore Jack Danco said.

The team doesn’t believe that their improved play has to do with a change in technique, or fundamentals, but rather, a more relaxed mindset.

“As a team we just weren’t as nervous,” Danco said.

Standout freshman Jake Griffin echoed these statements.

“In the beginning we were worrying too much about what our scores would be,” Griffin said.  “But lately we’ve been focusing on one shot at a time, and not worrying about what we’re going to shoot.”

The team is happy with the progress they’re making, but know they still have a lot of room to improve heading into districts.

“As a team we have to become more consistent, we usually have two pretty good scores, and then the others vary from good to bad,” Griffin said.  “If we get those four scores to be lower we can be a really good team.”

As a freshman, Griffin has been the Wildcats most consistent player this year.  He is currently tenth in the county in average strokes per match, with 38.5.  Even with all his individual success, Griffin remains fully focused on the team’s play.

“Of course you want to play well,” Griffin said.  “But if you play well and the rest of the team plays doesn’t play well, then it doesn’t matter how well you played.”

The Wildcats will now prepare for the all important districts match on October 2, at Poolesville.
