The fall season for the coed varsity golf team has gotten off to a rough start. The Wildcats are currently 1-14 after finishing in fourth place in each of their first three matches, finishing third place in their fourth match and then finishing fourth again in their latest match. The Wildcats shot 166 in their first match, losing to Quince Orchard who shot 165, Northwest who shot 163 and Sherwood who shot 156.
WJ shot 166 again in their second match, this time losing to Northwest who shot 162, Wootton who shot 158 and Whitman who shot 152.
In their third match, WJ shot 174 and lost to Churchill, Wootton and Quince Orchard. The Wildcats finally won their fourth match having 175 strokes, beating BCC who ended with 179 strokes, but losing to Northwest and Churchill with 165 and 146 stokes respectively.
In their fifth match, WJ shot a season best 162 strokes, but lost to Quince Orchard who had 159 strokes, BCC who had 152 strokes and Whitman who had 147 strokes.
Although they have struggled, the team remains optimistic that they can improve throughout the season.
“The season hasn’t gone the way would’ve liked so far,” sophomore Owen Porter said. “But there’s still time to turn it around.”
Although Porter and the rest of his teammates know that the regular season is important, their main goal is to keep improving throughout the season in order to gear up for a good run at districts and then hopefully states.
“The regular season is important, but districts is more important,” Porter said.
Although their current record may not look great, the team is still confident they can turn things around. Luckily for them, time is still on their sides and they’re improving with each match they play. They’re back in action on September 25, against Sherwood, Wootton and BCC.
