WJ girls varsity soccer started off the playoffs with a bang Thursday night, beating Einstein by an outstanding score of 8-0. WJ dominated the whole game and out-played Einstein
WJ started the scoring off early, with a goal from senior forward Mina Shahmirzadi just 10minutes into the game. About 10 yards from the goal, Shahmirzadi sent a chip shot just over the hands of the Einstein goalkeeper into the back of the net. The amazing chip goal by Shahmirzadi prompted a “You want some guacamole with that chip?” cheer by SGA president Thomas Azari, which he followed with a quick drum rhythm.
Later in the game, they scored another goal, this time from senior forward and captain CJ Maloney off an assist from fellow senior forward Gabi Vogel.
At halftime, the score was 2-0, but WJ wasn’t done yet. They added a staggering six more goals in the second half. Vogel and sophomore midfielder Emmi Mills both scored, but the star of the show was Maloney. She had a stunning four goals in the second half, bringing her total to five goals in the game.
With those five goals, Maloney has now moved up to fifth all time on the WJ girls’ soccer scoring list. This is an amazing feat for Maloney and she still has the rest of the playoffs to move up even further.
“I’m really excited about [becoming fifth all-time] and I’m just taking it one game at a time,” Maloney said.
After the win on Thursday, the girls move on to the next round of the playoffs. The second round will be held against Whitman on Tuesday, October 31 at 5:00 p.m.. Although the team lost to Whitman 3-1 earlier in the season, the team feels confident.
“We definitely have a good chance,” Maloney said..
Coach Joshua Kinnetz has faith in his team that they can beat not only Whitman, but every other team.
“Any given team can win on any given day,” Kinnetz said.
Going into the game against Whitman, WJ looks to be riding off the momentum from this 8-0 win to beat Whitman and advance to the next round of the playoffs.
