Week one of football started with Walter Johnson facing Poolesville at home. It was an exciting game that went into overtime. Thanks to the resilient offense and the outstanding defense, WJ won 27-26 the first time they started 1-0 since 2010.
Senior captain wide receiver Connor Phelps was recognized by the MCPS community by becoming the week one MVP.
“It was great but it wasn’t just me,” Phelps said, “It was the offensive line, it was [sophomore quarterback] Josh [Forburger], it was everyone. [Forburger] is fourth in the DMV in passing yards as well.”
Even though WJ beat Poolesville last week, nothing went right for them week two against Northwest, and they lost 47-13.
“We knew that Northwest was a really good team and we were disappointed with the result,” Phelps said, “But we think that we can beat Springbrook. They have got some athletes, but so do we, and I think we can come out ahead.”
“We’re just gonna go over what went wrong and what went right,” senior defenseman Leo Saucedo said, “But I think if we work hard, we can beat Springbrook.”
Springbrook got the best of WJ, though, coming back in overtime to win 32-25 dropping WJ to a record of 1-2 and Springbrook to 2-1.
Forburger now has eight touchdowns putting him third in the DMV, and senior receiver Aziz Diomande is now third in the DMV with four receiving touchdowns and is now sixth in passing yards.
WJ plays at Kennedy at 2 p.m. on Friday. Kennedy has a 1-2 record. They’re coming off an outstanding win against Northwood 48-6.
