The girls’ flag football team has been on a roll this fall, building an 8-1 record and finding consistency on both sides of the ball. Recently, they’ve beaten B-CC, Magruder and Churchill, securing a three-game win streak after a poor loss to Whitman. The team’s growing rhythm and chemistry were on full display in their latest matchup on Thursday, Oct. 16, when they edged out the Blair Blazers 7-0 in a close, low-scoring game.
For most of the matchup, both defenses held strong, keeping the score tied at 0-0 for more than half of the game. Key interceptions and stops prevented scoring opportunities for both teams. The atmosphere on the sidelines reflected the intensity of the game; teammates shouted encouragement and coaches made quick adjustments as each possession became more crucial as the clock was winding down.
On offense, Walter Johnson stayed patient, finding short gains through smart passes and runs. Eventually, their persistence paid off when sophomore quarterback Ruby Bonior ran the ball into the end zone to break the tie. Ruby threw the ball to her sister, senior Alina Bonior, who caught the ball in the end zone for the extra point to put the Wildcats up 7-0 while sealing the win.
“I think that our team succeeds well because we put in a lot of work,” senior Elizabeth Borissow said. “I think we do a lot more than other people probably expect. We practice a lot, even on the weekends.”
The Wildcats have built strong chemistry on the field, allowing them to stay composed in close matchups. They tend to make smart adjustments based on their opponent, which has been one of the keys to their season-long consistency. The team’s preparation and focus heading into each game is noteworthy, as the Wildcats approach flag football with a level of seriousness that can distinguish them from other teams.
“We’re really focused when it’s game time,” senior Lucy Sher said. “We have a playbook that we practice a lot, and we also watch film on other teams. I think that preparation really helps us know what to expect when playing them.”
That attention to detail has helped them maintain a competitive spirit, especially against teams like Blair that play with similar intensity. Players emphasize that staying organized and communicating clearly on the field keeps everyone in sync when it matters most.
“We have great communication on the field, directing everyone to the right place,” junior Victoria Webb said. “We also always practice how we’re going to perform in a game, so that when the time comes, we’re ready.”
As the regular season winds down, the Cats look to carry their momentum into the upcoming postseason. Their final regular-season game against Damascus on Monday, Oct. 20 will be a test of their dominance heading into the playoffs.
