The gymnastics team placed third overall in the MCPS Championships on May 13 at Walt Whitman High School. After finishing second the past two seasons, the GymCats hoped to match or improve on that result. While they didn’t reach the same podium spot, the team walked away proud of their performance, growth and spirit.
This season, the team earned wins over Sherwood and Blake, working to rebuild after losing several seniors from last year’s lineup. Even with those changes, the focus stayed on consistent training and supporting one another.
“Going into the county championships this year, my mindset was all about doing our best and putting out the best routines possible,” junior Shoshana Berger said. “We really focused on what our team was doing and didn’t worry about the other teams.”
The meet itself had a high-energy, supportive environment. Sophomore Romi Zilberstein said the atmosphere made the experience memorable and motivating.
“It’s exciting,” Zilberstein said. “Everyone is cheering for everyone.”
At every meet this season, the GymCats made sure their presence was felt not just through routines, but through team energy and connection.
“Some of the teammates memorize each other’s floor routines, and we all like to do it at the same time,” Evengiya Ibragimova said. “It’s so cute.”
Beyond the scores, being part of the team has shaped how the gymnasts experience high school.
“It’s really changed my perspective, because it’s like being on a team and everyone’s super supportive,” Zilberstein said.
As captain, Berger worked hard to keep the group focused and motivated, especially during more difficult meets and practices.
“My role was to lead by example and maintain a positive attitude, even during tough meets and practices,” Berger said. “I made sure to keep everyone focused on achieving their goals.”
