Winter Track kicked off their season earlier this week on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the PG Sportsplex in Landover, Maryland. The boys’ and the girls’ teams both finished in fifth place, contributing to the Cats fifth-place finish overall.
The girls’ 4x800m relay squad secured a first-place victory, which was run by sophomore Mirae Denaro, sophomore Maggie McGee, junior Audrey Blake and senior Megan Raue. The female Cats continued to perform well in the long-distance category throughout the night. Raue and Denaro followed their success into the Girls 3200m, with Raue finishing in first place with a time of 11:48:75. Denaro followed shortly after, coming in second place with a time of 12:02:56.
“I think it was really cool how a lot of us improved since the last meet. This meet was more of a serious meet, compared to our scrimmages last week. It was good to see everyone’s times improve,” Denaro said.
Senior Rapheal Meltzer ended with an outstanding performance in the Boys 300m, finishing first with an impressive time of 36.58. Meltzer continued his success as he participated in the 4x200m relay with juniors Alessandro Marenco, Koji Kirby and Ariel Stone. The team finished 2nd in the relay, with a time of 1:35.59.
“First meet of the season, we got some good placements. We got first in the 300m, second in the 4x200m. It was a good meet,” Marenco said.
Xavier Alexander-Pounds finished second in the boys’ shot put, as he threw an impressive distance of 41’1 feet.
“We have the momentum. This meet allowed us to get a feel [for future meets] and helped us go through the motions,” Marenco said.
The Cats look to carry the same momentum into the next meet as they return to the PG Sportsplex on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
“After the first MCPS meet, I loved seeing all of our athletes from different sections of the team cheering each other on. It made me excited to see the team comradery and everybody working for each other,” assistant coach Alexis Phares said.
