In their second game of the season, the WJ handball team beat Churchill 26 – 17. WJ did a great job on defense throughout the game.
Senior Nathan Rosenberg and junior Mila Monteith led the defense and held off the Churchill offense during the second half of the game.
The handball team was also aided by a great game in goal by senior captain Christian Torrijos. Torrijos made some crucial saves that halted any potential for a Churchill scoring run in the second half, which essentially sealed the win for WJ.
“Christian [Torrijos] played very well,” senior team member Tarek Halabi said.
The substitutions also had a great impact on the game, as Halabi came in and immediately had a big impact on the win by distributing the ball to teammates. He also helped Rosenberg and Monteith, leading the defense and holding Churchill to only a couple of points. Later in the game, the Cats kept trying to feed the ball on the pivot to junior Ishan Das for his height, but with little success due to a tightened Bulldog defense.
WJ came away with the win because of some amazing offense from senior Tal Chukrun and sophomore Patrick Quinn, which kept the Bulldog defense on their toes.
With the win, WJ moves to 2-0 on the season. The next home game is Oct. 13, at 5:30 p.m. in the WJ main gym against the Whitman Vikings. Look for the team to give the Vikings all they’ve got as they will try to move to 3-0 at the halfway point of the season.
