On Tuesday, Sept. 29, girls’ volleyball took the court against Sherwood donned in pink shirts as part of the annual ‘Dig Pink’, which raises money to help fight breast cancer. There was a raffle after the second set, as well as a serving contest before the game. All the money raised at the game will go to the Side-Out foundation, which, according to the side-out foundation’s website, awards grants to medical research organizations for breast cancer care and treatment.

During the game the crowd was electric and showed overwhelming support for the team. However, that was not enough for WJ to bring home the win, and they lost 0-3 . Through the first two sets they were dominated, losing 12-25, and 18-25 respectively. They showed resiliency in the final set, but ended up losing it 22-25.

Junior and outside hitter Anastazia Kolodziej explained why she thought the team did not play as well as they could have to get a win.

“I think that part of the spirit of ‘Dig Pink’ sort of got to our heads and so we should have probably focused more on the game as opposed to everything around us,” Kolodziej said.

She did not, however, discredit Sherwood, saying that she thought they played very well and that they were the main reason for WJ’s loss.

She also credited ‘Dig Pink’ to be the main reason as to why there was such huge crowd for a volleyball game. She also thought the crowd and loud atmosphere played an important role in the match.

“It definitely pump us up more,” Kolodziej said.

WJ was unable to get a victory, but with their overwhelming spirit for this event, and the amount of money raised, the impact went far beyond a win or a loss.
