Winter Sports Preview

As the temperatures start falling and the snow starts coming, the athletes start to heat up and prepare for the lengthy winter sports season.  This season will no doubt be a good one for the Wildcats as many teams look to improve and continue with their success.

Boys Basketball: The team has a new coach this year as Brian Fairall, former JV team coach, replaces Mark Karver as varsity head coach.  The Cats will look for senior guard Paul Green, junior point guard Michael Mahdavi and senior center Chris Espejo to score. A few key matchups that they have coming up are against rivals Churchill, Whitman, and  powerhouse Springbrook.  The squad lost their first game on Friday against Clarksburg.

Girls Basketball:  Girls Basketball is coming off of a 13-9 season last year.  They will be lead by senior forwards Maggie Howie and Kate Howie and point guard Erica Boyd.  Additionally, four underclassmen, sophomore point guard Ana Flake, sophomore guard Jordan Zavareei, sophomore center Sarah Sabet, and freshman center Jada Dupaa will add to the depth and talent of the squad .  The team should be competitive in a tough 4A South division, which features talented teams such as Whitman and Blair.  They won easily in their first game against Clarksburg on Friday.

Swim and Dive:  Swim and Dive will again look to keep up their success in the tough 4A South division.The team will have tough meets against division rivals Whitman, Churchill, and B-CC.  Their first meet is against Wootton on Saturday.  Look for sophomore Celine Nugent to really help the team with good races.

Wrestling:  The team entered this year coming off of a 21-9 season last year, in which they had only one senior on the roster.  They will be more balanced this year, with senior leaders to accompany talented juniors and sophomores.  Look for the team to have another successful season under first-year coach Blake Herrin.  The team will have tough matchups in the “Mad Mats” meet, Big Train Dual meet, and the “Best of the Nest” meet.  Their first meet is at Sherwood on Saturday.

Indoor Track:  The Track squad will look to continue success indoors.  The girls team will be led by senior Kiernan Keller, junior Emily Murphy and freshman Abby Green.  The boys side will be look for great performances by junior Christian Campbell, and seniors Itai Bezherano and Tae Wu Kim.  The team has very important meets at the Christopher Newport Invitational, Montgomery Invitational and Last Track to Philly Invitational.
