Two wrestlers went to the State Championships at UMCP Cole Field House on March 3 and March 5. Junior co-captain Elad Covaliu and junior Max McCleskey both participated in the match.
While McCleskey lost twice and was eliminated, Covaliu pinned his first opponent and won by major decision with a score of 12-0, earning entry into the state semi-finals.
Covaliu then earned second place overall at the State finals and wrapped up the season with a 42-1 record.
Coach Tom Wheeler was proud of Covaliu’s work.
“We are disappointed for [Covaliu] because he wrestled his best,” said Wheeler. “However, he lost 3-0 to the returning state finalist and all the wrestlers on the podium with him were seniors. He finished 42-1 for a new school record for wins in a season.”
Covaliu agreed.
“Although I didn’t get to finish my perfect season and go completely undefeated and win states, I am still very proud of myself for going 42-1,” said Covaliu. “It just gives me even more motivation to go back and win it next year.”
