The division champion girls volleyball team has continued their winning ways after winning their last three regular season games to close out the season at 12-2. The impressive regular season record has the team seeded second and earning a first-round bye in the Montgomery 4A West region with a legitimate shot for the regional title.
In its final games, the team easily defeated Kennedy 25-11, 25-10, 25-9 and went on to face a tough Paint Branch opponent. Convincingly, the team won in straight sets 25-21, 25-15, 25-19. Last year’s squad lost to the Panthers in a close four-set match, demonstrating that this year’s team is claiming its way to being one of the county’s most elite.
With one game left in the season, the Wildcats faced the Quince Orchard Cougars, a sure test of their playoff readiness. At 10-3, the Cougars are seeded first in the 3A West region bracket. The ‘Cats were determined to finish their strong regular season with a win and from two sets down, came back to finish the Cougars in five sets in a nailbiting match.
“Those [final] three games were good,” said coach Bill Morris. “Quince Orchard was a very exciting game and we’re ready for playoffs.”
The ‘Cats begun their season at the Magruder Invitational, a competitive tournament in which they went 1-3. From there they went on to win six of their next seven games.
“We’ve improved a lot since the beginning of the season,” said junior Julia Shekarchi.
Their first game and second round matchup will be against Northwest on Monday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. With a regional championship in their sights, the Wildcats will be ready to pounce on any team that comes their way.
