Before the playoffs, girls field hockey played Blake for the last game of the season. WJ lost, with a score of 0-2.
“It wasn’t one of our best games,” said senior defender Shenelle Sanoir. “It was an eye opener for us because we saw a lot of things that we need to work on in order to get ready for the tough post season.”
The game was senior night for WJ. The team was excited to play knowing they had beat Blake last year. In the first five minutes, Blake scored a quick goal, which threw WJ off. The girls quickly noticed that Blake’s style of playing was different from their own.
“We didn’t play our best game, but I think it only fired us up to go and win in the playoffs,” said senior midfielder Rachel Skay.
The nine wins during the regular season provided the field hockey team with a chance at the playoffs. WJ belongs to the 4A playoff brackets and WJ is a 4A West division team. The first round of the playoff game was a bye, and they continued the playoffs with a win against Thomas Johnson, dominating by a score of eight to zero.
The girls then lost their final playoff game against B-CC with a score of 2-3 (OT). In overtime, senior captain and defender Dana Marks tried stopping a shot, which the referee then called as a stick interference penalty, calling for B-CC to get a penalty stroke. The call cost them the game.
“Because of a certain unreasonable call an official made in overtime, we weren’t able to finish the game we deserved to win,” said senior captain and goalie Marjorie McCurry.
Other players had their own input on the game against B-CC and the call that occurred.
“We played our best game and I definitely think that we could’ve won if it wasn’t for the official and his bad call in our overtime,” said senior forward Alexis Wang.
