Last year, the girls varsity soccer team earned a reputable 7-5 record, which took them to the playoffs with six All-Gazette All Star players. This year, the Lady Wildcats have demonstrated that perseverance and a positive attitude will elevate their chances at the state championships.
With an 8-2 record this year, the girls soccer team has defeated rivals Churchill (3-1) and B-CC (1-0), state champion for the past two years.
The girls credit their wins to their strong team bond and hard work.
“As a team, we have become really close,” said senior forward Kailey Dickison. “We have been working really hard everyday at practice and we knew this was a game that would decide where we were in the division. All that work just fell into place and we played a great [last] game.”
The most important game of the season came against Northwest on Oct. 6. Without home field advantage, the girls still managed to dominate with a 4-1 win that earned them the 4A West Division Champion title.
“Beating Northwest 4 to 1 was amazing especially because it meant that we won the division,” said senior captain and goalkeeper Jessica Goldstone. “I think our team is extremely unique in that we are all such good friends and that translates into how well we play together on the field.”
The girls now get to look forward to a banner in their honor in the gym, as recognition for their success this season.
The team’s next game is scheduled for Oct. 14 at Blair.
