The boys basketball season came to an abrupt hault on Feb. 27 after a heartbreaking loss to the Churchill Bulldogs in a game in which they held a 14 point lead late in the first half. Throughout that game, it was a back and forth battle in which both teams led by over 10 points at one time.
The Wildcats came out strong in the first half taking a commanding lead into halftime but the Bulldogs stormed back through the second half to upend the pesky Wildcat team. The Bulldogs mainly won the game due to the free throws (sinking 23 out of 30) compared to the Wildcats who made just 8 out of 19.
Overall, the season was a disappointment in the eyes of the team, as the final loss gave the team a 1-21 record and a 1-10 conference record.
“We had our ups and downs,” said junior guard Michael New. “But we have a lot of talent going into next season and we are pretty optimistic.”
Coach Bill Morris has an overall good feeling coming away from the season and going into next season.
“[I feel] very positive,” said Morris. “The future is very bright.”
Although the season looks bad on paper, the team truly does have a lot to look forward to going into next year. The two leading scorers of the team were sophomore center Halid Hamadi and sophomore guard Harrison Gibert, who often scored in doubled figures for the Wildcats offense. With a young returning core, along with key shooters such as New and junior guard Tommy Christakos, the team plans on making winning a regular occurrence.
“We have a lot to look forward to,” said New. “We are a very young and talented team.”
