The varsity field hockey team grabbed their sticks and traveled to their away game at Damascus High School on Wednesday. Although WJ has never played Damascus in field hockey, the girls went into the game with their heads held high and confident.

In the first two minutes of the game, senior forward and co-captain Flor Martinez scored the first goal for WJ. The team was ecstatic, but their 1-0 lead against the Hornets soon turned into a tie. Shortly after Martinez scored, the Hornets came back and scored on junior goalkeeper Marjorie McCurry.

Even though the goal against the Wildcats threw the team off, the girls stayed on top of their game to keep the score at a tie for the remainder of regulation, forcing the game into overtime.

In the last 10 minutes of overtime, Martinez scored again, winning the game for the Wildcats.

According to coach Erika Murray, this was not the team’s best game skill-wise, but she was pleased with the 2-1 win.

“The team played with a lot of heart and that drive is what created the opportunity for the girls to win,” said Murray. “The team never gives up which is what every coach wants in a team.”

The team has gone 3-0 for the season so far and is preparing for their next game on Sept. 21 against the B-CC Barons.
