Last Thursday and Saturday our WJ girls’ varsity field hockey team won their first two games of the season beating Holy Cross and Thomas Johnson. On Thursday September 7, they played Thomas Johnson at home and blew out TJ 7-0.
On Saturday, September 9, they played Holy Cross at home and won a very close game , 2-1.
Senior captain Maggie Hickey shared her opinion on how the team was able to pull off such a big win in their first game of the season. “We were all super excited and energized going into the game and our offense played really strong,” Hickey said, “and were able to connect on a lot of passes and worked well together.”
Senior captain and defenseman Josie Laing had her own opinions about the team’s performance.. “During the Holy Cross game we played well together as a team but needed to work on keeping up the intensity the whole game,” Laing said. During this game Laing also scored a goal off of a corner pass. This was her first goal of the season and it was a key play leading to their win against Holy Cross.
On Wednesday, they played at Churchill and lost 1-0, and have now fallen to a 2-1 record on the season after a great 2-0 start.
Whitman is coming off a 3-1 win against BCC and WJ’s next opponent, they are currently in first place in the 4A standing with an undefeated record of 3-0.
Senior defenseman Cammie Busser also had a very strong game against Thomas Johnson, helping the team with a few very well executed clears of the ball and by stealing the ball from TJ’s forwards.
