At the beginning of each school year, students gather in the Student Commons during their designated science class and get their picture taken. These photos are then printed onto a physical ID which students receive and are told to use daily in order to enter the building. IDs are also required at school-sponsored activities, such as sports games.
These IDs have been a recurring controversy as students also have access to their digital ID card through their StudentVue app.
“I personally think StudentVue should still be acceptable because if they see you login with your school ID they can see the school that they go to,” junior Coleman Cabanillas said.
Although StudentVue can be used at times to enter the building, security around the school is adamant about having a physical ID present, which has caused some controversy. Every year, WJ prints out the same design on our ID cards, which defeats the purpose of using IDs to keep the premises safe.
The overall purpose of having these IDs is to prevent students who don’t go to WJ from being able to enter the school. Showing physical IDs at the door might limit the number of times this could happen, but it will not completely prevent it from happening.
Former WJ students who may have kept their IDs could hypothetically be able to get into the school using them, as there are many students coming into the building every day especially in the morning or during lunch. Due to this, the security around campus is unable to thoroughly check each ID and make sure the year marked on it is correct. This undermines the purpose of students needing to have their physical IDs present on them at all times. Through using StudentVue, former students and people who do not go to WJ would not be able to log into an account to prove they actually go to the school.
“I think they over-gratify physical IDs and StudentVue works perfectly and they ignore it for no reason,” senior Daniel Grossman said.
A security concern about StudentVue would be the flaws of technology nowadays and being able to alter what is seen on screen, which would be an issue; however, there are ways to fix this including showing that it is in fact StudentVue like they do at football games. Overall, many would rather use their digital IDs as they are a lot more convenient. In the future, students hope security will be more lenient about letting them enter the school using their StudentVue app.
