Every year as fall rolls around, the weather is expected to entail cool October air, or as others like to call it, “sweater weather.” In the past few years, it has taken a lot longer to get into the autumn and holiday spirit, but why?
Specifically during this time of year, people are ready to transition from shorts and t-shirts to sweatpants and coats. Temperatures globally have been dramatically increasing over the years resulting in warmer average temperatures including during the winter times. Even though it may feel like summer, we aren’t supposed to be having t-shirt weather right now.
Climate change is an ongoing problem. This is exemplified by the temperatures around Halloween. One year ago the temperature dropped as low as 41 degrees Fahrenheit with a high of 55 degrees. This is the average temperature that many would expect when we enter the month of November. Yet, this year those averages increased.
Because of rising temperatures, people can now expect a much warmer holiday season experience especially seeing as on October 31, temperatures reached a maximum of 82 degrees fahrenheit. Once we get deeper into the school year, we might expect to be able to snuggle under a blanket and watch the trees move with the wind, but as of right now, that may not be the case.
When people think of November, they should think of hot pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks, yet, now people are starting to imagine ice cold strawberry acai refreshers. Having warmer weather isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but many people who prefer winter are looking forward to colder weather and hoping for snow but they aren’t getting it. Many aren’t so sure if snowfall will occur this year.
Some people may not fully support or believe that global warming is real; however, there is evidence to go against their opinions. Human activity is one of the main reasons behind climate change and many don’t realize it, with one of the biggest causes being the increase of greenhouse gasses in the air. As we are becoming more innovative with different technologies, we should also be coming up with more solutions to address the problems of climate change. People may see warmer temperatures as a good thing seeing as it won’t be as freezing throughout the holidays.
However, what they don’t realize is that warm weather is being traded for a decline in air quality, resulting in health problems for many people. As well as, on a larger scale, natural disasters occurring all over the world due to these unnatural changes in climate. Global warming isn’t just focused on the temperature outside, but has a much bigger impact than many may think.
