New slang is created multiple times a year, mostly on the Internet or in certain states and cities and these unique words spread like wildfire worldwide. They can stem from either everyday words or things that a person randomly comes up with. Some are tolerable, while others should be dropped.
1. Mook
First, we have “mook.” The word doesn’t descend from any actual word, but was created in Buffalo, New York to describe somebody as dumb, call someone short or regard something negatively. An example of the word is “you look like a mook right now.” The word is ranked number one because it’s funny and can be used in a variety of situations.
2. Jazzing
“Jazzing” was also created in the state of New York. The word is used when somebody is talking too much and is a play on the word jazz which refers to a genre of music. The word can be used in sentences like “stop jazzing so much.” It doesn’t sound bad, even though it seems like something older people would say.
3. Cap
The term “cap” has been used since the 1900’s. Back then, it was used when someone was exaggerating something. More recently, it’s been used when someone lies. It was repopularized by rappers and YouTubers and had other spellings like “bap.” Cap deserves third place because it’s been around for a while and is applicable in many situations.
4. Bet
“Bet” should have two definitions in the dictionary: the formal meaning, which is to gamble, and the slang definition. Bet started being used in the early 2000s by people to come to an agreement; it’s mostly used to replace “okay.” It’s a catchy word to use and sounds natural to say. It is placed below cap since bet is slightly less influential.
5. Aura
“Aura” was introduced around the summer of 2024. It’s used to characterize somebody who gives off a certain type of energy. When somebody does something embarrassing, they “lose” a certain amount of aura, but if they do something positive, they “gain” aura. An example of the word used in a sentence is “I just tripped on the curb and lost all my aura.” Aura is in fifth place because it’s corny and overused.
6. Rizz
In dead last place is “rizz.” I’m tired of hearing it every day. Rizz fits in the same overused and corny category as aura. It descends from the word “charisma” and has roughly the same meaning. It was created by popular streamer Kai Cenat around 2022 and used so much by the public that it was put into the dictionary.
All of these words are popular, but some are better than others. In the future, there will likely be hundreds more slang words to come about.
