Dear Ali,
I have a friend who I think is upset about something, but she doesn’t really want to open up to me. I try to just let her know that I’m here for her; however I think she might actually need help. I don’t know how to approach her about it, because she’d feel betrayed if I straight up suggested that she get a shrink. What should I do?
Sincerely,
Frustrated Friend

Dear Frustrated Friend,
I’m sorry that your friend is upset. Unfortunately this is a tough situation and there’s not a lot of concrete advice I can share – it’s most important that you remain attentive and available for when she decides to open up. You’re being a good friend. However, have you tried asking your counselor about it? Your counselor may be able to suggest local therapists who specialize in working with high school students, and may be able to offer more specific advice about how to get your friend involved in that type of program.
Know that it’s just important that you treat your friend well and make sure she does not take extra stress out on herself.
Sincerely,
Ali
