To start the fundraising season off strong, Bake with Kindness has teamed up with LeadHer to raise money for the She’s the First foundation to help ensure girls around the world have access to education and have a voice. To raise funds, the two clubs plan to set up a bake sale after school in the athletic circle on Thursday, Nov.16.
Junior officer Kanna Lee relates the details of the sale.
“The bake sale will be held after school from around 2:30 until supplies run out. We’re collaborating with LeadHer to support an organization called She’s the First, and we want to encourage people to come and buy sweets that are tasty while also supporting a great organization at the same time. It’s a win-win for both us and the people buying the sweets,” Lee said.
The baked goods will be homemade by both LeadHer and Bake with Kindness members and will have a Thanksgiving theme to celebrate the fall season. There will be a variety of treats including but not limited to cookies, cupcakes and rice krispie treats.
In hopes of furthering girls’ rights to education, the two clubs chose to partner with She’s the First because of the work they do with grassroots organizations to promote girls’ leadership in communities. Senior Sreya Bhattacharyya, president of LeadHer, describes the impact of the organization.
“I think it’s important because in this community because we don’t realize that there are a lot of girls out there that don’t have access to education the same way that we do, so it’s important to bring attention to that and use the benefits that we have to help others that don’t have that,” Bhattacharyya said.
The original setting and date for the bake sale have gone through many changes since the start of the planning process. The bake sale was initially intended to be held during one of the football games, but due to administrative restrictions, the clubs had to revise the plan. LeadHer vice president and Bake with Kindness social media manager, senior Miriam Bernstein, provides insight into the early stages of development for the bake sale.
“Originally we wanted to do a bake sale at the football game, but apparently we’re not allowed to do that anymore,” Bernstein said.
For those interested in helping support women’s rights and education, LeadHer offers opportunities to learn more about the subject and to make connections with other organizations that support the cause. In terms of funding, they are looking to do more bake sales in the future.
“In terms of other events for LeadHer, we invite guest speakers and every month we work with this organization called “Days for Girls” and we help build sustainable period and menstrual products to be distributed around the world and in the US,” Bhattacharyya said.
