On Thursday, Sept. 22, WJ will have a gun education assembly in partnership with the Montgomery County State Attorney’s Office and the Montgomery County Police Department.
“We want to bring to your attention the concern we all share around the impact of guns on our communities, youth and schools (…) they present an increasing and significant danger nationwide,” MCPS Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monifa B. McKnight and State’s Attorney, Montgomery County John McCarthy said.
Throughout the fall, all MCPS high schools will take part in a gun education assembly. This was announced on Sept. 13 in a letter addressed to MCPS high school families.
“We thank the State’s Attorney’s Office for its commitment and partnership; together, we can work for a safer, vibrant, thriving community,” McKnight said.
According to the letter, information provided will include facts about the law and consequences, problem-solving without violence and the “See Something, Say Something” campaign.
“I think that it’s important we do this and it’s good that the county is looking out for the community,” junior Teke Helms said.
The schedule for the assembly day will include a triple third period–a schedule not commonly used. As the name suggests, it includes three 40-minute third periods for students to attend the assembly.
