On Nov. 14 at around 2 p.m., Potomac resident David Goldberg stabbed two people in the Montgomery Mall parking lot, leaving them in critical condition, in what prosecutor Robert Hill called a “very serious case of road rage.”
According to arrest records, Goldberg and the victims had a disagreement at a four-way stop sign outside of the mall, when he failed to make a complete stop. The victims’ car honked and Goldberg yelled several infanities out of his car in response.
The victims’ car, which held a male driver, female passenger, an older woman and a young child then followed Goldberg. At the next stop sign the driver exited the car and approached Goldberg, but Goldberg sped away in his Mitsubishi sports car. The victms then continued to the mall, and parked near a Sears store. The passengers got out of the car, not expecting any more conflict, and began heading into the mall.
Then, from across the parking lot, Goldberg came speeding at them in his Mitsubishi, jumping over a curb on its way, according to Hill. One witness told police, it looked like Goldberg was trying to run the victims over.
Instead, Goldberg stopped his car, got out and began to fight with the 31-year-old man from the other car. According to police reports, Goldberg slashed the man with a “folding knife” on the left side of his face, right bicep and upper back. When one of the other passengers, a 28-year-old woman, attempted to stop the fight, Goldberg stabbed her in the stomach, perforating the wall of her abdomen.
When police responded to the scene, they discovered Goldberg near a California Pizza Kitchen restaurant on the upper level of a nearby parking garage, and his two-year-old daughter in his car as well. He is currently being held without bond and is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and three counts of reckless endangerment, among other charges.
