After graduation, the lives and futures of seniors take off. WJ senior Jack Fisher, however, will find his future literally soaring: he is enlisting in the United States Air Force.
A member of the Thomas Edison High School of Technology for the Automotive Technology program and a WJ wrestler, Fisher believes the physical and mental requirements of the Air Force suit his abilities and interests. When recruiters visited WJ, Fisher was immediately intrigued.
“They talked about how the air force could utilize the skills I’d developed in the program toward working on military aircraft,” said Fisher. “They caught my attention with the job opportunities they offered.”
Joining the Air Force is no simple task. Fisher has had to intensively work out this past year to meet basic training requirements and pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test to show his basic knowledge and mechanical abilities. He considers the pay-off to be well worth it.
“I am looking forward to visiting many parts of the world through deployments after basic training,” said Fisher. “The benefits that come along with the military service, such as health care and educational training, are also nice. I am also anticipating my work in general, because I love being a mechanic.”
Fisher plans to explore the mechanics side of aviation, fixing and building aircrafts, which the school system has helped prepare him for.
“WJ provided me with the Edison program, which is what introduced me to the air force recruiters,” said Fisher. “All of my teachers and my friends have been very supportive along the way too.”
Fisher plans to enjoy the rest of his summer with friends and family before heading off to the Lackland Air Force base in Texas, where he will begin his basic training.
When asked to reflect upon his WJ experiences, Fisher feels thankful.
“I’ve enjoyed my time at WJ – it’s a great school,” said Fisher.
