Asian culture assembly showcases students’ heritage

Senior Skylar Zheng plays Buwan by Juan Carlos alongside three other guitarists. The Filipino song falls under the category of harana, a tradition where a man gathers a group of his friends to play a love song to his love interest in an effort to win her favor. “As a whole, I think it went pretty well,” senior and lead guitarist Andrei Barcelona said. “I got a lot of compliments from my friends, my teachers. It was a lot of serotonin.”

Senior Asa Illahi sings Bawa Dia Kembali by Mahalini, accompanied by junior Ahmad Malika on the piano. Despite being sick, Illahi was able to perform in each of the three assembly periods.

Junior and KPRO club Treasurer Esther Yeo dances to Midas Touch by Kiss of Life with another KPRO member. “It was really nerve wracking the very first assembly, but since we also did this last year, after the first one it was ok,” Yeo said.

A member of WJ’s Taekwondo club breaks a piece of wood in half with a punch. Club members successfully executed multiple strikes and kicks, notably including a triple roundhouse kick.

Seniors and assembly organizers Bella Relacion, Essil Ezzoug and Sareen Papangelou introduce the assembly. “I think a lot of people liked it, and I’m really glad because it took a lot of planning and practice,” Papangelou said.

Hip hop club members grab their hats as part of their dance’s finale. “It was really really fun,” junior and hip hop club President Esther Yeo said. “Everyone worked together as a team and I think the most important thing is just having fun during the assembly.”

Freshman Renu Vijayaraj dances to Kannazhaga, a South Indian song. “We worked on it for four months,” Vijayaraj said. “I was happy with how it went, it was really fun.”

Senior and KPRO Vice President Alexis Batac dances to Midas Touch by Kiss of Life alongside other KPRO members. “It went really well,” Batac said. “I feel like I could have danced better, but I did my best.”

The members of hip hop club strike a dramatic pose. Senior and club President Esther Yeo said that while she wouldn’t share specifics, the club is already planning on how to make next year’s performance even better. “I guess we’ll keep that a surprise,” Yeo said.

Assembly organizer Meher Parsinni holds her arm out to the audience as she dances. Approximately four months of preparation went into the assembly, and freshman Renu Vijayaraj said she thought “everyone did really well.”
